What is Lip Enhancement and is it Right For Me?

Lip enhancement, also known as lip augmentation refers to a range of cosmetic procedures done to improve the shape, color, size, symmetry, and overall aesthetics of your lips. While some lip enhancement procedures are surgical, others are non-surgical.

Is Lip Enhancement Right for Me?

Our bodies are constantly changing due to factors such as aging, weight loss, weight gain, etc. Similarly, our lips change. Your once full and plump lips may become thin, flat, and asymmetrical. Lip enhancement can help to restore their fullness. It can also help to improve their symmetry, define the bow’s curve, and get rid of wrinkles.

To determine if lip enhancement is right for you, consult with a professional, experienced, and reliable cosmetic surgeon. They will ask you several questions to establish if your state of health is conducive for the various procedures.

Health conditions such as diabetes, oral herpes, lupus, or blood-clotting problems may disqualify you. Also, let the doctor know if you have any allergies.

Depending on your health conditions and the structure, shape, and fullness of your lips, your doctors will recommend the most suitable lip augmentation options for you. They will discuss with you the pros and cons of each to help you narrow it down to the right one. Factor in the cost of the procedures to identify the ones you can afford.

Surgical and Non-Surgical Lip Enhancement Options

Below is an overview of the various lip enhancement procedures.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a non-surgical option for lip enhancement. They are semi-permanent lip injections. Most of them are hyaluronic acid-based, which is generally safe.

The treatment procedure takes 15-30 minutes, although the whole process may be completed in several visits. There is little to no downtime after the procedure. However, you may experience mild side effects such as bruising, redness, or swelling, which resolves within a few days.

In case the results are not satisfactory, the procedure is easily reversible by using enzymes to dissolve the fillers. Depending on the type and amount used, they can last a few months or up to a few years. To maintain the results, this procedure needs to be repeated over time.

Fat Grafting

Also known as fat injection, fat grafting is a surgical procedure that involves liposuctioning fat from one part of the body and transferring it to the lips. If it is successful, the results can last for several years with no need for repeat treatments. However, in case you are dissatisfied with the results, the procedure is irreversible.

While there are no incisions made on the lips, you may require some time to recover depending on the extent of the liposuction.

Lip Implants

Lip implants are another semi-permanent option, but they last longer than lip fillers. It is a surgical operation that is done under general or local anesthesia. It involves opening the lips and placing silicone implants between lip fat and lip muscle and then closing with absorbable sutures. The procedure is done in approximately 30 minutes and you may require 1-3 days downtime.
